Questions about the ecoo app

General

  • Where can I download the App?

    The app is available in the Google Playstore and the Apple Store. (Currently only in Switzerland).

  • I've installed the App. What should I do now?
    • First you must log in. This requires you to use your Apple or your Google account. (This is for login only, neither Apple nor Google can see your transactions within the app).
    • Create a wallet for yourself: if you’re an individual, click on “Privat”. If you’re representing a shop, click on “Firma”
    • Enter your personal data and let yourself be verified by the city/exchange. When you’re verified, you’ll automatically receive the starting deposit from the city (individual) or can exchange your coins for fiat currency (shop).

    Make sure you have a pin, fingerprint or face scan as well as an automatic lock-screen enabled on your mobile phone! Due to security reasons, you will not be able to use the app without these safety features in place!

  • Can I exchange coins with other ecoo users?

    Yes, you can give coins to or receive coins from other ecoo users participating in the same campaign (same currency).

  • Why should I participate?

    The goal is the support the local economy. To this end, as much of the available funds should be claimed and spent in the local shops.

  • I have a new smartphone. What should I do?

    Install the ecoo app on your new phone. Log in with the same account that you used on your old account (Apple or Google). You’ll be asked to authenticate yourself (pin, fingerprint or face) in order to migrate the wallets to your new phone. This will take a couple of minutes. When finished, you’ll automatically land back on the homescreen.

Private (Individual)

  • How can I claim the coupon from my city?

    After you installed the ecoo app, you need to create a wallet.

    • On the “Wallet Typ” screen, click on “Privat”
    • Enter your personal data
    • Confirm that you have entered the data correctly and truthfully and that you agree to the data privacy policy.
    • If the data that you entered agrees with the data on file, you’ll receive a pin via Text Message (SMS). Enter this in the provided field.
    • After the correct pin is entered, you’ll automatically receive the deposit from the city.
    • If the data that you entered does not match the information on file the city will get in contact with you in order to further check your request.
  • What are the different functions within the app?

    Homescreen

    • Zahlen (pay) – Click hier to make a payement. A vendor will present you with a QR code to scan, which already includes the recepient wallet and the amount. Or you can enter these values manually.
    • Guthaben aufladen (recharge) – Here you can request the coupon from your city.
    • Anfordern (request) – Click here in order to request a payment from someone. You’ll create your own QR code that your peer can scan to complete the payment.

    • Wallets – This is the overview of the wallets that you have. Click on any one of them to switch to its context and land on the homescreen to complete or receive payments for that account.
    • +Wallet – If you need to open another wallet (for example if you already have an individual (privat) wallet but now need to open a shop wallet as well), you can do this here. You’ll start at the “Wallet Typ” screen again.

  • How do I pay a shop with ecoo?
    1. On the Homescreen, click on “Zahlen” (pay).
    2. Scan the shop’s QR code.
    3. Check the details of the transactions, and if correct, click on “Bestätigen” (confirm).
    4. In case the code does not contain the amount for the transactions or in case it is incorrect, you can adjust it manually.
    5. After a completed transaction you get redirected to the Homescreen and you see the transaction in your transaction history at the bottom of the screen (“Verlauf”).
  • Can I use only part of my coupon at once?

    Yes. You can use your coins as you would money, all at once or only part of it at a time.

  • How can I request a payment from another ecoo user?

    You can request a payment from another ecoo user (must be in the same currency).

    • On the Homescreen, click on “Anfordern” (request).
    • Enter the desired amount.
    • Present the generated QR code to your peer to scan.
  • What happens to the coins that I still have at the end of the campaign?

    At the end of the campaign, your coins will lose their value. As an individual, make sure you use all your coins at a participating shop before the end of the campaign!

  • I don't have a smartphone (or don't want to use it for this). Can I still participate?

    It is possible to get a coupon from the city, even without a smartphone. Please go the the city hall with an ID to request a paper wallet.

    Keep the paper wallet in a safe place! Be careful not to smudge it or crumple it, as it will make scanning it difficult. When you go shopping, present the coupon to the shop to scan.

    In case you only use part of the amount, make sure the write the remaining amount on the paper so that you remember for next time.

    Once you have used the full amount, you can discard the code.

  • I have children without smartphones. How can they get their coupons?

    You can claim the coupons of your children into your ecoo wallet. Please complete the verification again (available on the Homescreen under “Guthaben aufladen”). Use the data of your children instead of yourself. Once the request is approved by the city, the deposit will be made automatically to your wallet.

Shop

  • What are the different functions in the app?

    Homescreen

    • Kassieren (collect payment) – Click here to create an easy-to-scan QR bill for your customers. You enter the desired amount and present it to the customer to scan. Once the payment is completed, you can see the transaction in the History (Verlauf) section on the Homescreen.
    • Senden (send) – Here you can send an amount to another ecoo use (individual or shop). Scan their QR code or enter the recipient wallet and amount manually.
    • Einlösen (exchange) – Once you are verified, you can click here to exchange your coins for fiat currency. If you are not yet verified, this button will take you to the verification form.

  • How can I request a payment from a customer?

    On the Homescreen, click on “Kassieren” (collect payment) and enter the desired amount. Present the generated QR code to the customer to scan.

    In case the customer presents you a paper wallet, klick on “Paper Wallet Scannen” to scan in their wallet.

  • How can I exchange my coins for fiat currency?

    In order to exchange your coins for fiat currency, you need to verify your shop’s identity with the city. For this you enter the required data in the verification form when you create a Shop Wallet (or if you already have an unverified shop wallet because you skipped the verification, you can click on “Einlösen” (exchange) to reach the verification form).

    If the entered data agrees with the data on file, you’ll receive a pin in the mail (snail mail). Enter this in the appropriate form (also reachable via “Einlösen”) to complete the verification Process.

    Note that you can still accept payments, even if you have not fully completed the verification process yet.

    You can submit your balance at the end of the campaign or multiple times throughout the campaign. You must always submit the full balance you have in your wallet at the time of submission.

  • Can I use my coins to make a payment (at another shop)?

    Yes, you can use the balance in your shop wallet to make payments at a participating shop (or to a participating user). The process is identical to an individual (private wallet).

  • What happens to the coins that I still have in my wallet at the end of the campaign?

    At the end of the campaign, your coins will lose their value. As a shop, make sure to exchange all your coins for fiat currency by the deadline!

  • Do I need a smartphone?

    As a shop responsible, you require a smartphone to open a wallet, complete the verification and to submit coin-to-fiat-currency requests. Payments can be made to a “paper version” of your wallet. For more information on this point, please see question below (‘multiple registers’).

  • My shop has multiple cash registers. How can I handle payments with ecoo?
    • On the Homescreen, below the Wallet ID (eg. ED123435), there’s a QR code symbol.
    • Click on this QR code symbol and print out the code that is displayed on the screen.
    • Post this code at each register.
    • The customer clicks on “Bezahlen” (pay) in their app, and scans your code. They then enter the amount, present the screen to you for verification and confirm the payment.

Technical Questions

  • What technology does ecoo use?

    Ecoo was built on Tezos, a decentralized blockchain network designed to offer the upgradability, security, and continuity required for long-term, high-value applications. The protocol’s on-chain upgrade process, Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus algorithm, and ability to facilitate formal verification make Tezos an ideal long-term solution for digital transactions, including smart contracts and digital securities. Tezos is open-sourced, fully decentralized and can be used by companies and individuals worldwide.

  • What happens with my data? Who can see what?

    All personal data is saved on hardware located in Switzerland.

    This city can see the personal data (name, address, date of birth, place of origin, telephone number). These are only used in the context of the ecoo app and campaign, and are not added to the the database of the city. All of the personal data will be deleted at the end of the campaign.

    The data is not shared with third-parties.

    The app login is handled by Apple or Google, however, neither service provider has access to information within the app.

    All transactions are recorded in publicly accessible Tezos Blockchain. These entries will remain even after the campaign. An entry looks similar to the following:tz1hdQscorfqMzFqYxnrApuS5i6QSTuoAp3w -> tz1hdQscorfqMzFqYxnrApuS5i6QSTuoAp3w: 2 WetziKoins

  • Can I request that my data is deleted?

    Yes, you personal data can be deleted on request. The ledger entries in the public blockchain with the public wallet IDs and transaction amounts will remain.

    Please contact the city with a deletion request.

  • What permissions does the app require?

    The app needs to access the camera (to scan QR codes) and a data connection to register transactions.

  • What happens if I don't have a data connection?

    For the login to work, you need a data connection (mobile or WiFi). If you are already logged in, then transactions can only be made if your transaction peer has a data connection: you need to create the bill/payment request and your peer needs to scan it. Additionally, your history (Verlauf) will not be update until you are back online.

  • Who developed the app?

    The ecoo app was developed by DU DA – Data & CommTech by Farner and Papers AG.

  • I have to log in with my Apple or Google account. What do these providers see of my app usage?

    Neither Google nor Apple can see your transactions within the Apps. Their services are only used for authentication purposes.

  • Why do I have to enter a telephone number?

    During the verification process for an individual’s wallet (Private), a pin will be sent to the given telephone number via text message. This pin needs to be entered in order to gain full functionality of the wallet.

    The telephone number entered by individuals or shops may be used by the city to contact the user in case of verification questions.

    The phone numbers are not added to the database of the city, are not shared with third parties and will be deleted again at the end of the campaign.
